Radiology SA offers access to four MRI machines in the Adelaide metropolitan area. Medicare dictates whether the machines have a GP or specialist referrer licence. This will influence at which site the scan can be offered.

GP referred MRI 16 years and over (head, cervical spine and knee)

Rebatable indications:

MRI Brain

  • Unexplained seizure OR
  • Unexplained chronic headache with suspected intracranial pathology

MRI Cervical Spine

  • Cervical radiculopathy OR
  • Cervical spine trauma

MRI Knee

Acute knee trauma with either:

  • Inability to extend the knee suggesting the possibility of acute meniscal tear OR
  • Clinical findings suggesting acute anterior cruciate ligament tear AND
  • The patient must be under 50 years of age
GP referred MRI under 16 years (head, spine, hip, knee, elbow, wrist)

Rebatable indications:

MRI Sinuses

  • Where disease has not responded to conservative treatment

MRI Brain

  • Unexplained seizure or headache where pathology is suspected

MRI Spine*

  • Significant trauma, unexplained pain with neurologic signs or where significant pathology is suspected

MRI Knee

  • Assessment of knee injury

MRI Hip*

  • Suspected septic arthritis, Perthes or slipped capital femoral epiphysis

MRI Elbow*

  • Where significant fracture of avulsion injury is suspected that will change management

MRI Wrist*

  • Suspected scaphoid fracture

* Must have xray first

Prostate MRI

Rebatable indications:

  • Must be referred by a specialist
  • Medicare only cover one scan per 12 months

MRI scan of the prostate for the detection of cancer

Indications for a patient suspected of having prostate cancer:

  • A digital rectal examination (DRE) which is suspicious for prostate cancer OR
  • Increased PSA (this will need to be confirmed by your referring specialist as specific criteria and age limits may apply)

MRI scan of the prostate for the assessment of cancer

Indications include:

  • A patient under active surveillance following a confirmed diagnosis of prostate cancer by biopsy
  • A patient not planning or undergoing treatment for prostate cancer

Breast MRI

Rebatable indications:

  • Must be referred by a specialist
  • Medicare only cover one per 12 months
  • Patient must be under 50 years of age

The patient is at high risk of developing breast cancer due to 1 of the following:

  • Specific strong family history
  • Positive genetic testing

Crohn's disease MRI

Rebatable indications:

  • Must be referred by a specialist
  • Medicare only cover one scan per 12 months

MR Enterography (MRE, MR enteroclysis, MR small bowel)

  • Evaluation of small bowel Crohn's disease

MRI for fistulating perianal Crohn's disease (MRI anus, MRI pelvis)

  • Evaluation of pelvic sepsis or fistulas from Crohn's disease
